Associate Professor Alexander van Akkooi, MD, PhD, FRACS, FSSO
Associate Professor Alexander van Akkooi is an internationally recognised surgical oncologist and melanoma specialist. He served as a Staff Consultant Surgical Oncologist at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI), Amsterdam, from 2015 to 2021, where he also chaired the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Centre. He is the former Chair of the EORTC Melanoma Group and has played a leading role in advancing melanoma research and treatment globally.
Now based in Australia, Associate Professor van Akkooi is Chair of Melanoma & Surgical Oncology at Melanoma Institute Australia and holds clinical and academic appointments with the University of Sydney and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He also serves as Section Chair of Surgical Oncology for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS).
His clinical and research interests focus on melanoma, skin cancer, and surgical oncology, with a strong commitment to improving patient outcomes through innovation, multidisciplinary care, and international collaboration.
